Is that a tiny girl or huge mold? Our school’s solar car is about the size of a regular car, yours looks massive. Also wet layup? I’m the composites team lead for our school’s Formula SAE team and just looking at that makes me twitch lol.

Also not to be a safety nag but depending on what resin system and mold material I hope you guys have better respirators than the N95 dust masks. You can buy N100/VOC combo cartridges and masks for less than $30 all in and it’s definitely worth it in the long run if you’re putting in as many hours as I imagine you all are.

I’m going to guess infusion, at least the mold is optimally designed for such.

Well, she’s small AND the molds are large. We’re building for the new multi occupant class though, so it’s much larger than our old single occupant car.

We’re actually doing resin infusion, where the resin will be pulled through the mold by a vacuum. We’re currently using an appropriate spray adhesive to get the plys in place for bagging, so nothing too toxic in the air yet. The mask were mainly to cover the face and prevent itching from the fibers.

I didn’t know they did multi-occupant cars, that’s kind of awesome. We’ve done resin infusion for the last few years on stuff like the nosecone and sidepods and endplates but always had problems with leaks in the tape and bag even on small molds so I don’t envy you guys trying to get it right . What’s your vacuum setup looking like? That’s an awful lot of surface area to infuse over.

No idea what the vacuum set up is, but I’m confident it’s adequate. We’re partnered with an aerospace composites company that builds drones for the US military. They also had a contract a while back making the top fairings for Volvo trucks.

It’s been a tricky process but our professional friends don’t seem too worried about it working. Learning a lot.

Tip for you current solar car racers - tiny girls are a huge competitve advantage as drivers. At the start of every year there would be some variation of “If you’re girlfriend/neighbor/housemate/uncle’s cousins former roommate’s daughter is on the smaller side and into mountain climbing/sailing/rowing/swimming/insert name of activity which requires upper body strength and also possesses a driver’s license, we want to talk to them about being a team driver.”

Depending on how your steering is rigged, you need someone who can handle the car, but even if it’s a little heavy that’s easy for someone who is an athlete (of either gender). So if you can get someone smaller, it saves weight. Some races will make you ballast (I think they caught on in the late 90s), but in general females can save 20-40lbs over a comparable male driver. Plus females have way higher heat tolerance, which is a huge advantage, especially in the Australian races. All of our primary drivers were female.

Im mad at you for doing what I can’t but so badly want to do. I hate having ideas only for them to happen before my eyes and there’s nothing I can do about it x{

This is something I’ve always wanted to do until now. Don’t give up, you’ll find a way to do it. Amazing what being in the right place at the right time and a University budget can do.
